MUSIC SCENE AT THE BISTRO

By BRANDON SEARCY

The diverse music scene that The Coffee Pot Bistro offers is one of the reasons that make it a popular hangout spot in downtown San Marcos.

The coffee shop offers a weekly music event entitled Jazz Mountain Thursday every Thursday at 8 p.m.

“Jazz night started regularly in January 2012,” said Breanna Murphy, international studies junior at Texas State University. “Yes, whenever we have jazz night there is definitely a lot more people in here and a lot of the performers have friends come with them to watch.”

Because Jazz night is a weekly event new performers are always welcomed.

The Coffee Pot also hosts concerts on select weekends that feature local musicians of all genres.

Sarah Arrendondo, family and child development junior at Texas State University, went to her first concert on Saturday night.

“I came to the coffee pot earlier and saw that a band called ‘I am Geronimo’ would be playing,” said Arrendondo. “Me and a few friends decided to come back later to watch the show.”

Along with I am Geronimo, single act Dillon Hutyra of Grey Sky Symphony performed his new album, Cloud Factory. Hutyra also performed a cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” to a highly enthusiastic crowd who sang along with him.

With the small town atmosphere offered by The Coffee Pot Bistro, otherwise known as The Coffee Pot, and a mixture of music for customers to enjoy, it is easy to see why the coffee shop is so popular.

Those interested in performing can contact The Coffee Pot’s event coordinator Vanessa Vass at vanessa.vass3@gmail.com.

THE COFFEE POT BISTRO HOSTS MAGIC CARD GAME-NIGHT

By JOHN GARZA

The Coffee Pot Bistro, otherwise known as The Coffee Pot, was awash with spells and incantations as Magic enthusiasts gathered to play the popular card game on Monday.

Magic: The Gathering card players have been gathering at The Coffee Pot since last fall to play, collect and trade cards. These game nights have helped generate new customers to the coffee shop, some of which have become regulars.

Richard Sabrsula, computer science freshman at Texas State University, is one of these regulars and has been attending the Magic game-nights every Monday since last fall.

“The Coffee Pot is a great place to meet,” said Sabrsula. “There’s a lot of room in it and it’s a good central location for everyone.”

Magic card-players meet and play in a back room of The Coffee Pot where other student organizations have been known to meet and where students at the university can study.

Sabrsula enjoys and continues to come to these game nights because he has met new people, many of which live on-campus at the university with him. Sabrsula’s favorite drinks at The Coffee Pot are the Call-Me-Crazy coffee and The Coffee Pot Bistro coffee.

Weston Baxter, computer science sophomore at Texas State University, started a Facebook page, Texas State Magic, where many of these card-players coordinate their meetings. Baxter has been attending the game nights at The Coffee Pot since last fall as well.

Magic: The Gathering is a popular card game with about 12 million players as of 2011. Its creator, Richard Garfield, introduced the card game in 1993 and it has won many awards since its introduction, including Games Magazine’s Games Hall of Fame.

The game nights at The Coffee Pot take place every Monday at 7 p.m. and are apart of the business’s efforts to expand their event categories. Those interested in hosting an event at The Coffee Pot can contact event coordinator Vanessa Vass at vanessa.vass3@gmail.com.
